It’s been a good news week (for renewables) - Yorkshire Heat Pumps

The government has this week breathed fresh life into the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme and demonstrated its ongoing commitment to low carbon heating technologies. That’s good news for us as installers and great news for anyone considering renewable energy heating for their home or business.

It was excellent to hear in the new chancellor’s Budget Statement this week that the government really is committed to low carbon technologies.

While steps to mitigate the effects of Coronavirus dominated his speech there were two announcements that brought a smile to our faces at Yorkshire Heat Pumps at this difficult time.

1. The Renewable Heat Incentive scheme will be extended until March 2022 for air source and ground source heat pumps, biomass boilers and solar thermal panels
2. A successor to the scheme will be launched in 2022 in the form of grant funding through the Low Carbon Heat Support Scheme.

The Renewable Heat Incentive scheme was due to close to new applicants on 31^st March next year, but has been extended by 12 months. This will be music to the ears of all those considering a switch to renewable energy heating for their homes, especially those who are self-building, converting or undertaking a major refurbishment and were worried they might miss the deadline.

There are, as yet, no details of the successor to RHI - the Low Carbon Heat Support Scheme (LCHSS) - other than the budget of £100m of grant funding to be made available from 2022 – 2024.

These commitments will certainly help the country on the way to meeting its net zero carbon target by 2050, but in order to achieve this ambitious but necessary target, we anticipate there will need to be further support for consumers beyond that date. We’ll have to wait for details of the LCHSS and whatever might follow, but for now, we’re ready and waiting to help homeowners and businesses benefit from the incentives currently available.
